SEPTARIAN NODULES (ALSO KNOWN AS DRAGON STONE)
The name Septarian comes from the Latin word 'Septem' which means seven. This name was given to the stone as the mud balls which formed dried and shrank, then they would usually crack in a distinctive pattern with 7 points of direction. This can be seen in the nodules patterns.
Septarian nodules are unique and beautiful. They formed 50 to 70 million years ago. Volcanic eruptions attracted dead sea life, chemically bonding them to the sediment around them, forming mud balls. As the ocean receded, the balls dried, cracked and shrank, creating the cracks inside. Decomposed shells seeped into the cracks where calcite crystals formed. The outer thin walls of calcite transformed into aragonite.
Septarians are composed of Calcite (Yellow), Aragonite (Brown Lines), and Limestone (Grey)
